Excellent Video On Growing Climate Impacts and The Benefits of Mycorrhizzal Fungi From Chris White Our Committee Member In Melbourne
With serious climate events increasing due to polar winds from the South Pole being pushed north, the time left to address this the cause of this problem is running out. NB OSGM is using a similar soil biostimulant to the one mentioned in Chris' video, from "TM Agriculture" see: bestfarmigmingsystems.com.au/tm-agricultural-biostimulant/.

This Great Graphic Shows What A Zero Waste To Zero Emissions Transition Looks Like

Zero Emissions and Waste are a very important part of bringing pollution and emissions under control, then there are the other actions required to restore urban and rural landscapes through planting and restoring carbon in the soil.

International Treaty To Protect Our Oceans
This highly important treaty requires that nations collaborate to protect our oceans from overfishing and deep sea mining. The author of the article Luke McMillan, is a tireless campaigner for the protection of our oceans as the largest sequester of carbon, and one that is still not well understood.

Climate Impact Mitigation For New Urban Developments
Below is an a link to an ABC news item on planting in a new Melbourne suburb to mitigate urban heat.
Tree by tree, this new suburb is dodging baking heat in summer
Thousands of young trees dot the streets and front gardens of this outer Melbourne suburb as part of a neighbourhood-wide push to create more shade and curb the urban heat island effect. Read the full story
This is what needs to be happening at Marys Mount.

Climate Council - Greg Mullins Warns Of Fire Risk
An important part  of OSGM's work is flood and fire mitigation and is part of what has already been started at Marys Mount with the tree planting and will extend into the suburb itself:- Flood and Fire Mitigation
Advice from the Climate Council -
Invest heavily in disaster preparation and community resilience at all levels of government so we’re as prepared as possible for the worsening fire risks we already face. The report covers fire risk and not other climate mitigation such as urban and broad-acre landscape regeneration.  A such carbon reduction is covered but not sequestration.

The Small and The Big: Life's Fundamental Energetic Dichotomy
The Small and the Big: Life's Fundamental Energetic Dichotomy
This is a very thought provoking article on how the consumption of fossil fuels have thrown the earth's energy balance out of wack with the only practical solution being to adopt the principals of sutainability, as the retrievable amounts of raw materials continue to run-down. Adequate mineral resources need to be left for 3rd world nations to achieve a resonable standard of living.

Sustainable Supply Chain Solutions
Thanks go to Dr Casey LaFrance in the US, via LinkedIn, for this valuable guidance.
If we cast our minds to the height of the COVID pandemic, there were some two days in our Woolworths supermarket where there was very little fresh food in the store and evidence elsewhere in the store of panic buying.
It makes emminent sense that we work now to mitigate such situations, as they will assuredly happen again.
Luckily a member of our management committee is a very experienced project adviser who is already building our project management capabilities to make generally available.

Brilliant TED Talk On The How Restoring Our Natural World Will Restore Climate Equilibrium
(https://go.ted.com/rekC)
We have lost sight that man is an animal and that agriculture, civilisation and industrialisation has taken us to where we are today with resultant environmental destruction that is driving the climate crises. Renewable Energy, unfortunately, will not restore the natural world, but reduced energy consumption through improved energy efficiency will help.

(UK) National Emergency Briefing On Climate and Nature

The briefing starts around the 10 minutes mark into the recording and stresses that we have very little time left to take meaningful action.

Stressed was that the priority action is the restoration of NATURE and
NOT the adoption of renewable energy. This is likewise OSGM's priority

The first speaker is very hard hitting and the third speaker, minute 29 onwards, stresses that restoring our natural world will deliver the most significant economic benefit. The 4th speaker talks about rebewable ernrrgy. Whilst OSGM has been pursuing that path since its inception, I do not believe that message is widely understood.

For more more information on the action being taken by OSGM to address the climate challenge at Marys Mount, can be found on the following link:- is www.facebook.com/share/p/1BZaTYYqUh/

OSGM Appointed A One Planet Living "Systems Connector"
The establishment of a team of "Systems Connectors" by a founder of OnePlanet.com, a sister company of Bioregional (UK), Pooran Desai, has been recently announced on LinkedIn, see:-

https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7400206617637490688/.

This appointment of "Systems Connectors" is supportive of the message from the UK climate emergency briefing, to expedite building sustainability, starting with the restoration of Nature.

The Systems Connector role is one that OSGM has been purusing for some years now. Formailising that initiative under the OPL banner, have been doing now for some time, which is to connect up community groups across an LGA and across LGAs. The Community Sustainability Hub is the key building block of  sustainable communities. The One Planet Living framework supports the  CSH.

Another important support for building sustainable communities is the graduate and diploma course s on Sustainable Living that are run by the University of Tasmania. More soon on a partnering arrangement with UTAS.

Restoring Our Landscapes Through Nature, NOT Technology! - Biotic Regulation and Biotic Pump
BBR&BP! - A very interesting and important article on restoring our landscapes in order to bring the climate back into balance,  a recurrant theme that is gaining currency. This is the course that OSGM, as a founder of the SE NSW Community Sustainability Hub, has been launched for six years. The mission includes emissions reduction, flood and drought mitigation and, bringing nature into our suburbs, the latter in particular in new developments, such as Marys Mount in Goulburn-Mulwaree and possibly similar developments in Wingecarribee.

The above task can be assisted in a number of well-established ways, preceded, in some cases, by a large boot up the backside!!! Here are some of those boot-inspired initiatives:-
  1. Building a picture of ecosystems in our LGAs by connecting-up like-minded community groups and commercial entities.
  • The UK company that developed the OPL mindmapping/plannng tool, has launched a "Systems Connector" training program attended by a member of the Community Sustainability Hub Committee. The systems connector role is primarily one of facilitation and the first step is to bring like-minded groups together. This has been a challenge in G-M.
  • Plans by Bioregional, the developer and owner of the One Planet Living framework, an organisation of some 30 years standing, is planning to invest further  in the promotion of One Planet Living in Australia. Bioregional provide training and consulting services in the UK. Given the challenges and obstacles in the adoption of the OPL framework in the G-M LGA, mentioned above, it might be better to find a more progressive LGA in which to invest funds, to avoid unnecessary risk.

GMC Cycle Path Program

  • The Council's cycle path initative, the latest being around Victoria Park is most welcome and can only with eco-tourism. And linking that track up to the riverside walking/cycling track would be useful, in particular if  the available shade along that track can be increased, as is already happening over the creek from Warrigal, behind Green Valley Road. Such a program could complement the Rail Trail initiative, but more immediately.
