My  Sustainable School

Whilst the NSW Department of Education has a sustainable schools program, see:- sustainableschoolsnsw.org.au/, it was previousy operating in Sydney with limited take-up in rural NSW.

The intent of the G-M/SE NSW Community Sustainability Hub's "My Sustainable School" project is to build in the work of schools by bringing them together where possible, as part of the CSH program, that will link it to the wider projects, in particular with the University of Tasmania's Sustainable Living diploma and undergraduate degree course. Likewise say Southern Cross' regenerative agriculuture course and relevant TAFE courses, such as Market Gardening, if they run such..

The above is in support of the imperative of restoring urban and landscape to be sustainable and productive.  It was recently acknowledged in a presentation to a forum of UK parliamentarians, business leaders and community leaders, by leaders in sustainability and renewable energy, that restoration of Nature is the priority and one that delivers the greatest economic benefit.

A high-school sustainability program needs to meet the requirements of the NSW Education authority and align to the UTAS curriculum.

Potential projects could be:-
  • To build a mycorrhizal fungi patch that would be used on the school grounds.
  • To build a Johnson-Su using carbon and nitrogen sourced from their own grounds, with the soil innoculant used on the school grounds and sold to parents and beyond
  • In the interim, Best Farming Systems may supply some of their compost free or at a discounted rate.
  • Learn about regenerative agriculture
  • Have some exposure to the Water NSW/Mulloon Institute's Sydney Water Catchment regeneration program
  • OSGM's Marys Mount and other of its projects.
The first step would be to talk say to one of the schools.

In support of the above:-
  • The schools to have a sign to say they were particpating
  • Sell signage to partents who were establishing ther own MF patches
